Just a Little Yeast: A Reflection for Democracy Day

It’s another Democracy Day, and once again—as I always do on this occasion—I’m pleased to share Just a Little Yeast, a poem by me on the subject of impact, a matter that’s deeply dear to my heart. Here’s my intro on this year’s occasion.

One reason people often struggle to make tangible impact is because they focus on grand gestures while overlooking small, everyday actions.

But I’ve come to realise that impact isn’t about wealth, status, or exposure. As Barack Obama recently put it, “…people ain’t all that…”—reminding us that many who hold power may not have it all figured out. Yet, power and wealth often cover a multitude of sins.

To truly earn the right to challenge broken systems or speak up against wrongs, we must first make our own positive contributions—no matter how small—and especially within our immediate circle.

For example, do we sometimes look away from situations that are clearly unfair simply because they don’t affect us directly? Do we excuse questionable practices within our social circle, instead of calmly speaking up for what’s right?

Are we eager to call out corruption at the top, while overlooking areas in our own environment where fairness and responsibility could be improved—like how vulnerable people are treated around us?

When we talk about injustice, do we pause to consider the quiet struggles of the weak—those who may never speak their truth? Or do we get caught up in lofty speeches with plenty grammar and charity drives, more for public approval than lasting impact?

Maybe we can begin from there…

In the words of Michael Jackson, “I’m starting with the man in the mirror…”

I’m learning that in life, the race is not necessarily to the swift. Likewise, real impact doesn’t depend on how big or visible we are. The change we desire as a nation truly begins from our inner circle.

Please enjoy my poem.

Happy Democracy Day, Nigeria.
