Beautiful, brilliant, energetic and passionate are words every encounter with vivacious Nonso Olive Nwandu brings to mind.
“I have this flashy look naturally, so when I tell friends I have my share of troubles too, they hardly believe me.” Nonso once told me with that spirited smile that is now inseparable from her brand; or have I ever caught Nonso not smiling before? Thinking*
At a time in our economy when many young people prefer to take the path of least resistance and find solace in paid employment, thereby ditching their passion for momentary reward, Chukwunonso Olive Nwandu is another young courageous Nigerian who has chosen to swim upstream in pursuit of purpose, defying the odds. And presently, she is making a very bold statement in the Nigerian Fashion Industry.
I ventured into it for the passion, the craft and aesthetics of the trade. My inspiration came from nature, its beauty and how it’s being depicted through silhouettes and fit. My first role model is Elle Saab.”
Nonso is an Education Accounting graduate of The University of Portharcourt, and she is currently pursuing her M. Ed degree in Administration and Planning. She discovered her passion for fashion design in her university days. Interestingly, she also has great passion to teach very young children, which she fully expressed as a kindergarten teacher during her National Youth Service (NYSC) while also working on her fashion brand as a side hustle. She later proceeded to join a Creche as Head of Administration, while still building her fashion business.
Livnoire Klothing officially started in 2012. The startup experienced such rapid growth that Nonso had to quit her paid employment to run her fashion design business on a full-time basis, and it’s been a blissful adventure ever since.
“I ventured into it for the passion, the craft and aesthetics of the trade. My inspiration came from nature, its beauty and how it’s being depicted through silhouettes and fit. My first role model is Elle Saab.” Nonso once said.
So, I hung out with Nonso recently and asked few questions about what tickles her fancy. I’m sure her answers will inspire you.
Funmi: Tell me your three things, I mean three things that excite you.
Nonso: Things that excite me are
- Fabrics – that’s expected, since I’m a designer. I love sultry silks, anything white… African prints and floral prints.
- Movies – especially thrillers and CSI kinda movies
- Music – I love me some Afro pop… R & B when I want to sleep.
Funmi: Interesting, so what three things Inspire you?
Nonso: Three things that inspire me are:
- God – He’s my all in all
- Books – Motivational Books from Brian Tracy and Anthony Robbins are my favorite. I love ‘Awaken the Giant Within‘ in particular. It’s a big book but I’ve read it over four times.
- Customer Satisfaction. I’m inspired when I see my customers smile. That keeps me going.
Funmi: So, what advice have you found most useful in business, and who or where did you get it from?
Nonso: My best advice in business is, “Never give up. When it seems like you’re failing, don’t give up. Take a closer look, and you’ll discover that’s the point you are actually doing something right.”
I got it from a mentor /teacher Dr. Anderson.
